CALGreen was developed by the California Building Standards Commission in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of new construction.

The code contains provisions for water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality which must be met in order for a project to be compliant.

CALGreen is the first statewide green building code in the United States. Adopted in 2009, CALGreen requires all new commercial construction and major renovations to meet certain standards for water and energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and more.

It was developed by the California Building Standards Commission in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of new construction.

To meet these objectives, the code requires that certain standards be met in the design and construction of buildings.

Some of the specific standards that buildings must meet include:

Water Efficiency:

All new construction must meet strict standards for water conservation, including low-flow toilets, showerheads, and faucets. In addition, greywater recycling systems are required for all new commercial construction projects over a certain size.

Energy Efficiency:

This includes features like solar panels, double-paned windows, and energy-efficient lighting.

Commercial construction companies must also perform an Energy Efficiency Audit prior to beginning work on any new project.

The audit assesses the project site and determines what measures can be taken to improve energy efficiency and minimize waste during construction.

Materials & Resources:

The code requires that all new construction use recycled materials whenever possible and that any wood used comes from certified sustainable forests. In addition, all demolition and construction waste must be properly disposed of or recycled.

The code also includes provisions for increased ventilation in office spaces and classrooms, as well as enhanced daylighting measures to reduce energy consumption.

To further encourage sustainable construction practices, CALGreen offers financial incentives for builders who exceed the minimum requirements set forth in the code.

In order to receive certification, you must submit an application and fee to the certifying body.

The application will be reviewed to ensure that all requirements have been met.

Once your project has been certified, you will receive a certificate that can be displayed at the site.
